Artist Statement
I aim to take photos that give a sense of insight into my everyday activities. I spend a lot of my time with friends exploring the environment around us. We are rarely content unless active and all easily interested in the things that don't usually catch others' eyes. A lot of this exploration takes place at night time which is thus portrayed in the images. I like my photographs to be interesting whilst also being simplistic. In other words, visually rich but not cluttered. My photographs predominantly consist of urban visuals including streets, footpaths and train tracks. I also like to include my friends in the photographs as they are always there with me and make for adjustable subject matter. We usually walk until coming across an interesting setting where I can imagine a nice photograph being taken, then assess whether it needs identifiable subject matter or not. I feel that my photographs create an accurate depiction of the adventures and possibilities present in my surrounding environment.
My work is also influenced by the work of Garry Winogrand. Winogrand is a New York photographer who aims to capture American life and the social inequalities that accompany it. By seeing the world surrounding him as unfair, Winogrand utilizes everything he sees in front of him to let his photographs tell a story.
